In the two decades since designer Blake Tovin established Tovin Design Limited, he has built a reputation for creating elegant and enduring designs for a broad range of clients. In addition to furniture Blake has created lighting, textile, tabletop and rug collections.
Following graduation from University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1982, Blake spent several years producing handmade furniture and accessories for individual clients and galleries. His attention to detail and understanding of materials and manufacturing processes has helped define his design work throughout his career.
His early work with Dansk International Designs came to the attention of textile designer Jack Lenor Larsen who hired him to run the furniture division at Jack Lenor Larsen, Inc. the “to the trade” textile, furniture and rug company located in New York City.
At Larsen Blake was involved in all aspects of the business, from product design to marketing. He traveled internationally to establish production sources and working with select manufacturers to produce the Larsen furniture collection. His time at Jack Lenor Larsen was a valuable education that positioned him to establish his own company, Tovin Design Limited, in 1992.
Tovin Design Limited is a design licensing and consulting office based outside New York City. Blake along with a small staff of designers work with leading retailers and manufactures to develop products that evoke each clients brand and expand their market position. Blake was early to spot the importance specialty retailers like Crate & Barrel and Restoration Hardware in residential furniture and has had long standing relationships with numerous players in this channel and has played an integral part in establishing the look of
Blake is also the founder and creative director of Symbol Audio, a unique new company that produces innovative products integratating audiophile quality electronics with benchmade furniture. Launched in 2012 at ICFF in New York. Symbol Audio combines Blake’s interest in music and design. In it’s first year Symbol’s products were featured in publications around the world and could be found on numerous “Best Products of 2012” lists.
With a Bachelor of Industrial Design degree from Southern Illinois University, Matt started his design career at furniture retailer Design Within Reach. He has also worked in a product development role at modern furniture company Council. Matt brings a keen eye for detail and sensitivity of the retail furniture landscape to Tovin Design Limited.
Andrew joined Tovin Design as an intern and was welcomed to the team after receiving his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from University of Cincinnati.
